Television recently broadcast two, two hour specials of the
Terry Pratchett books, Going Postal & Hogfather. Going Postal
I enjoyed but Hogfather I turned of after fourty-five minutes.

That leaves me wondering if either of the two specials was a
fair adaption of Pratchett's books or not.

Would some well read person please give me an opinion on this.

I have not seen either of the specials. (Lack of a television can cause this.)
I do know that I think Hogfather is a better book of his than Going Postal is,
though both are excellent.

If you mean the films for TV by Jean Vadim, they were rather twice one hour
and an half each, so rather nearer three hours than two, unless your channel
butchered them.

They are both quite fair adaptations, but you should note that Hogfather
came first, so it is normal for it to be less ironed out than the next ones.
Also, Hogfather is more closely related to the inherent logic of the
Discworld Universe, and as such much harder to adapt.

The channel I watched was ABC an Australian government owned channel.
No commercial adverts & nothing to interupt a prog.

If Going Postal is a fair adaption as you say then I may read some of
the
books when WOT finishes. Thanks.

If this was what you were wondering about, then I would say you ought
to definitely read some of them. There are 30 or so to choose from.
Some are a bit silly and slapstick, others less humourous and more
philosophical, but they're all pretty good in my opinion.

The Night Watch books are my favourites (Pratchett has a selection of
characters to call on, and the main character of a book tends to
dictate what facet of the Discworld the story will be about: Vimes =
Night Watch / crime; Granny Weatherwax = Witches / mythology;
Rincewind = Wizards / running around randomly being scared of things).

Funny, I preferred Hogfather.

There's also an adaptation of The Colour of Magic and The Light
Fantastic that was pretty good.

Pretty fair, all things considered. Missed a few things, but how can
you show Bloody Stupid Johnson's invention of a circle where pi is
exactly 3, on television?
