What's your favorite scene?

Ok, so it's alittle quiet around here... Perfect time for idle
speculation of absoltively no use.

With 11 books already out, we have innumerable scenes to point to and
say, 'That's important' or 'That was cool' or even 'I don't get it...'
So the object of this post is to ask the question, "What's your
favorite scene?" (you'd think the title would give away, but some
people are slow, so you have to say it twice...) This doesn't mean
'what's the most important scene in the series', but rather, 'what's
the most important scene in the series, TO YOU!'

This question came to me as began re-reading (for the 'I don't even
know how many'th time) the series... And while I think the first book
is the best of the series hands down, I released that there's not a
single scene in the book that I look forward to with anticipation. As
much as I was enjoying it, I released I was looking forward to getting
through to read The Great Hunt. Not because it was better (it's not)
but because I LOVE the scene of Lan bring Rand to meet the Amyrlin
Seat, and Rand facing down the Aes Sedia. I think the interplay between
the characters, the character developement in just that short a span,
and the developement for the rest of the series in that scene are so
well down, I really can't help but enjoy it. And for many of the same
reason, my second most favorite scene is between Mat and Birgitte when
he realises her true identity.

So tell us, one and all, 'what's your favorite scene?' (There was one
more slow one there in the back that didn't get the question the first
two times...)

And join us next time on 'Useless Posts' for 101 Uses for a Jordan
Novel - Roaches Beware!

the first thing that jumps into my mind is the the end of lord of
chaos. The battle at dumai wells. When rand blows up his prision and
starts to kick ass and the ashaman and taim are there making heads
explode and the shaido get their ass kicked - great,

if not that then lanfears reveal to rand at the end of fires of heaven

if not that then the downfall of semirhage in a knifes dream

if not that then lan rescuing nyneave when moghedien blows up her boat
on the way back from the windfinders, and nyneave is very happy

There are so many! But that is why we've all reread the books so many
times!

I was encouraged by kod and look forward to the next volume. I hope
jordan can return to the quality that was so evident in loc and foh!

This was one of the best. Or how about Mat blowing the horn and the
Heros assembling and Hawkwing's dialogue with Rand and Co.?

I guess it's hard to say "favorite", but in terms of excitement, or the
scene that makes myhairs stand on end, I'd have to say the scene from
KoD when Nynaeve drops Lan off at World's End and then starts spreading
the word among the ex patriot Malkieri that the Golden Crane is ridinig
to Tarwin's Gap. Loved it! This sounds sappy, but I almost cried when

Did that to me too! One of my favorites. The other two are when man
leaves the white tower, half healed, and kicks two accomplisheds
swordman asses, and the scene in Rhuiedan (sorry for the way I probably
mispell such names), when we learn about the past of the aiel, and how
they are the opposite of who they are.

I'd say my favourite and most important scene is in KoD when Lews
Therin takes control and uses all those fancy weaves against the
Trollocs. This is cool becuase it's the first time Rand ever loses the
battle of wills, but more importantly, it shows just how much the two
have integrated: the terms 'web' and 'weave' are there used
interchangeably to describe the same thing. Not only a great instance
of characterisation, but also a unique way of doing it.

As for my favourite scene from each other book...

NS: When Lan throws Moiraine in the lake, and then Moiraine throws the
lake onto Lan.

TEotW: When Rand meets Elayne and Gawyn, thus discovering that The Two
Rivers is part of a larger nation (among other things). Closely
followed by when he winds up in the royal audience chamber before
Morgase and Elaida.

TGH: When Rand defeats Turak in battle, thus officially making him a
blademaster.

TDR: When Mat is Healed of the Shadar Logoth taint; the stuff he says
sets the tone of his character for the entire rest of the series.

TSR: When Perrin and Faile see of the trollocs, and then the Whitecloks
try to arrest Perrin. It's done well, and also the last time we see
Perrin for an entire book :(

TFoH: When Nynaeve uses the collared Moghedien to fight Rahvin in
T'A'R. It's just so cool to see a Foresaken forced to fight another.

LoC: Dumai's Wells. Fecking awesome, and has Perrin in it!

ACoS: No scene in particular really stands out, but I like when Rand
takes the Laurel Crown and renames it the Crown of Swords. To me, this
shows his arrogance in attempting to force the Pattern. (In pride he
conquers...)

TPoD: Rand trying to use Callandor, and getting hit by the Taint. To
tell the truth, that's the only part I distinctly remember from the
book.

WH: During the Cleansing, when the Amayar sees the female Choedan Kal's
ball glowing and realizes the Time of Illusions is at an end. That
scene sent a chill down my spine the first time I read it, and as for
what the Amayar did in KoD...

CoT: Even though fanny adams happened, I'll still pick a favourite
scene. Egwene changing the Tar Valon harbour chain to cuendillar. Take
that, Elaida!

AMoL: Rand having the foursome with all his girlfriends. Hey, it could
happen.

Maybe not the most important, but the one I like the best is Nynaeve
besting Moghedian in Tanchico (even if it did lead to some of the more
boring, drawn out crap in the later books).

After that, it would be Perrin finally breaking down after he learns of
the death of his family.

On the flip side, I dread anything with the Seanchan, the Shaido, and
Padain Fain.

I like several in the books. Mostly from the earlier ones, as is true
with most of the readers here based on what I have read. However, my
favorite scene is in his most recent book. KoD chapters 26 and then
continued(in my mind atleast) 36.

When Tuon, who has thought the whole time of Matt as nothing but an
idiot, realizes the is a bad bad man. I just like the respect that
Matt finally gets from a female, any female. He is my favorite
character. And her big body guard, Furyk Karede, realizes that he is
the author of all the damage being done to the Seanchan armies with
only 7-8 K people.

I know that I may get flamed for this, but one of the scenes I always
looked forward to when re-reading the series was the 6 chapter in PoD
when Egwene dupes the SAS into following her.

It's been so long I cannot recall in what books which scene was but
these are the scenes that I really enjoyed.

1) Moiraine telling the Duopotamians about the Fall of Manetheren. This
is what lead me to think this series would be great (for a time,
anyway).

2) Rand talking a trip in the Way-Back machine in Rhuidean, traveling
backwards through his male ancestors' memories. This was out and out
brilliant writing. I want to go re-read it now.

3) Mat sliding in and out his memories while dancing with Betse Silvin
in Maerone, at a ball with a Sea Folk emissary under a crystal dome
just before the Trolloc Wars brought that at all to an end. Very
poignant.

4) The climactic battle in the Two Rivers campaign when Perrin leads
his people to victory with some help from Faile, who was valiant and
noble for that particular moment. This was, I think, the high water
mark of the saga for me. Perrin's story arc had a culmination that was
very satisfying. Flashes of goodness later, but this was it where it
all started to fall out of alignment. After here.

5) Nynaeve thinking that she is about to be crushed by Moghedien in
that duel in Tanchico, suddenly has a flash of comprehension that
Moghie was babbling because she wasn't about to call up her massive OP
whupass, she was already maxed out and Nynaeve beats her by hitting her
with an object. It actually makes sense from Nynaeve's point of view,
written in clear linnear thoughts, and her shock and then shocked
realization of her own power just beams off the page.

6) Elayne when she storms into rescue the panarch not knowing if she
was about to take on the whole coven of Black Ajah; that took balls.
But Elayne is always doing foolhardy and courageous things, only back
here, she didn't become impetuous and get *other people* killed.
6a) Elayne and Birgitte fighting off the Seanchan advance at the
Kinswomen farm. Makes a great mental picture (to me)

7) Nynaeve, Elayne and Egwene when they tackle their first bunch of
Myrdraal. They douse them with Fire, compress them into a ball with
Air, and then Nynaeve spontaneously balefires them, gratutiously. Its
the first time all three of cut loose and wreak havoc.

8) Nynaeve rallying the Malkeri to the Golden Crane. Dai'shan! Dai'shan
mother fuckas! Sappy, I know. But damn it felt right.

9) Rand dueling with High Lord Turak. It was actually written very
tensely, and you sense Rand's panic and then relief.

10) Egwene when she realizes that she has been leashed. There is a
visceral shock to that scene that still I feel. Her hands frantically
looking for the clasp as she tries in vain to free herself, as "her
cloak flaps behind her like a sail." Ugh.

11) Mat's chance encounter with the Aiel on the rooftops of Tear, then
bumbling into a duel with High Lord Darlin. Like so much of Mat's
escapades, it combines derring-do, humor and dumb luck. It was amusing
for a while.

12) Egwene schooling the Rebel Aes Sedai with the Law of War. Also,
Egwene's not-so passive resistance to her treatment in theTower as a
captive. Egwene matures, and matures some more.

13) The scene when Verin shows Egwene a scar that she received in
T'A'R, and Egwene's inner monologue - "My dreams are bad enough, I want
no dreams that leave scars!" I just loved how much creative thought
went into that line, all the fantastical back story that allows us to
make sense of it.

14) Rand and the "I win again Lews Therin, Flicker" episode. Very
creepy and captivating. I want to go read this again too.

15) Mat freeing Nestelle the Sea-Folk woman in the "kennels" in Ebou
Dar. Just such a very Mat thing to do, reminding me why he's such a
great character, although I still think he would get on my nerves
personally.

Damn, I used to love this series.

These are the scenes I enjoyed (and I will try to acknowledge prior
posters):

1) When Lanfear comes upon Min when she is trying to keep Rand warm at
the end of TGH, she says her speech. Min asks who she is and she
replies simply that she is Lanfear.

2) As Chris McCrohan posted earleir, the scene in TDR when Mat is
healed.

3) When Perrin and Egwene tell Elyas their planend story and he knows
they are lying. He then says that he hopes that they are not
Darkfriends since it would be a shame to kill them after he just fed
them.

4) the scenes in TFoH where Mat is leading the troops (which will
become the foundation of the Band of the Red Hand.

5)

I agree with you.

6) In LOC when Egwene is receiving her toh (after admitting to the Wise
Ones that she lied to them). She is badly beaten, but asks them not to
take a break as she has a long journey ahead of her.

7) Moggy's reaction when Egwene weaves a gateway.

8) As the originator of this thread stated, the scene when Mat &
Briggette (sp?) each learn of the others secrets.

9) When Mat learns that Tuon is the DotNM.

10) Briggette's quote to Elayne when she realizes that Elayne saved her
life by bonding her as Elayne's warder [I will attempt to do this quote
from memory and will probably butcher it]:
"If you must mount the gallows, give a jeer to the crowd, toss
a coin to the hangman and make the drop with a smile on your lips"

[if anybody has the exact language of that quote, I would appreciate
him or her posting it]

11) When Tuon completes her wedding vows in KoD and then in the next
scene explains the meaning of the prophacey she received.

12) Finally, in KoD when Mat and company witness the traveler "melting"
back into time.

I think it is fair to say while fans of WoT may have a lot to gripe
about, Jordan has created a number of memorable scenes.

I enjoyed the part where Rand cleanses of the taint. The massive use
of power, as well as the mini battles that encircle him the whole time
was intense reading.

I also enjoyed Egwenes time back in the tower as the Amyrlin. I love
how she sticks it to all the AS.

Is this pure Jordan, or did he steal it from some other source? I
could have sworn I'd heard something very similar to this beyond the

One of my favs from ACoS is when Cadsuane bursts in on Rand in the
throne room of the Sun Palace in
Cairhien. First she sweeps in with the hauteur of a proud cat with its
tail pointing straight up. Then with a
metaphorical snap of her fingers she summarily dismiss Berelain and
snatch Annoura from her. Lastly she push
Rand so hard that he detonates like a supernova: he uses the OP to hurl
a heavy silver tea service through a mirror,
half-flattening the teapot and bending the tray into an U. This outburst
from him didn't faze Cads at all: she's as
calm an unruffled as ever.

First time I read this scene I nearly fell off the chair laughing :-)

But I'm in two minds about Cads. She's so damm cool and undisobyable: if
she says "Frog" people around her jump.
On the other hand she can be so arrogant and bitchy towards Rand that I
sincerely hope that he will put his foot down
and order her to drop that bitchiness on pain of being shielded, dosed
with forkroot and put on 100mg Thorazine
per diem...

But I'm in two minds about Cads. She's so damm cool and undisobyable: if
she says "Frog" people around her jump.
On the other hand she can be so arrogant and bitchy towards Rand that I
sincerely hope that he will put his foot down
and order her to drop that bitchiness on pain of being shielded, dosed
with forkroot and put on 100mg Thorazine
per diem...
My pet theory, based on the fact that Cads annoys me no end, is that
the thing she will teach the Asha'man is that they cannot be afraid to
hurt women. Logain will be the first to figure this out, by giving her
a great slap across the face.

2) Rand talking a trip in the Way-Back machine in Rhuidean, traveling
backwards through his male ancestors' memories. This was out and out
brilliant writing. I want to go re-read it now.
A lot of people blast it as wasted time, but I really liked it..it was
a unique approach to tell the story backwards and let us figure out
what happened.

3) Mat sliding in and out his memories while dancing with Betse Silvin
in Maerone, at a ball with a Sea Folk emissary under a crystal dome
just before the Trolloc Wars brought that at all to an end. Very
poignant.
Hmmm...I don't remember that scene.

As I said before, this is my favorite by far.

Makes a great mental picture (to me)
None of the Elayne scenes really do much for me.

12) Egwene schooling the Rebel Aes Sedai with the Law of War. Also,
Egwene's not-so passive resistance to her treatment in theTower as a
captive. Egwene matures, and matures some more.
I was going to mention Egwene's maturation through KOD; I'm not sure
what stopped me. Much of KOD really took the series back to what it
should be. The Aiel "embrace the pain" was extremely well-done.

Damn, I used to love this series.
I'm feeling better about it since KOD.

Ok, so it's alittle quiet around here... Perfect time for idle
speculation of absoltively no use.
This doesn't mean
'what's the most important scene in the series', but rather, 'what's
the most important scene in the series, TO YOU!'
It's been so long I cannot recall in what books which scene was but
these are the scenes that I really enjoyed.
1) Moiraine telling the Duopotamians about the Fall of Manetheren. This
is what lead me to think this series would be great (for a time,
anyway).
2) Rand talking a trip in the Way-Back machine in Rhuidean, traveli
backwards through his male ancestors' memories. This was out and out
brilliant writing. I want to go re-read it now.
I've re-read both of these. Also, the Battle at Falme, when Mat becomes
the Hornsounder, and the Battle in the Sky happens.

This reader remembers, when reading the first time through, realizing
that there are at least two Forsaken-class channelers in the Good Guys
camp, so they might just have a chance to win.

mother fuckas! Sappy, I know. But damn it felt right.
I could see Golden Crane banners unfurling all across the Borderlands...

11) Mat's chance encounter with the Aiel on the rooftops of Tear, then
bumbling into a duel with High Lord Darlin. Like so much of Mat's
escapades, it combines derring-do, humor and dumb luck. It was amusing
for a while.
"Time to roll the dice."

A personal fave at the end of KoD:

Mat finds out he's become the Prince of the Ravens when he married Tuon.
He did not like nobles, "And now he bloody was one!'

This is probably my favorite scene in the entire series. Seeing the
entire history of the Aiel unfold backwards, in a manner that actually
made sense. Discovering their roots and how far they've strayed from
them, and yet how seemly the transition was. I loved the fact that the
Aiel were accorded great respect before and during the War for their
strength in pacifism, and now they are accorded great respect for their
skill in battle. This scene has so much information regarding the Aiel
as a people, and their purpose in the Pattern, and I still shiver every
time I read the scene where the Bore is created.

After here.
Another of my favorites. The Prodigal Son returns and saves his home
and his people, and in doing so, elevates himself to a King (not in
name, but when you eventually have a queen as your vassal, there's
really no other way to say it). The betrayal of the Whitecloaks, the
arrival of the Terrens Ferry (sp?) reinforcements, the courage of the
women and children and simple farmfolk (and the fulfillment in them of
the Blood of Manetheren); all of this makes the Battle of the Two
Rivers one of the most memorable in the books. Plus, Perrin is a
favorite character of mine.

Agree with you on this one too. Sappy, sure, but I'll admit that my
eyes were a bit wet when I read "The Golden Crane flies for Tarmon
Gaidon!" (from memory). I can't wait to see the results of this scene
in the final book.

9) Rand dueling with High Lord Turak. It was actually written very
tensely, and you sense Rand's panic and then relief.
Another great scene. One of the first times that Rand really comes
into his own.

Damn, I used to love this series.
Despite my frequent gripes, and a great deal of annoyance at some of
the writing and characterization, I still do love this series. I'm
reminded of this by the fact that anytime I pick up a random book in
the series to read just to kill an hour or two, I end up reading from
that point on until I finish (yes, I'll admit that I skim through a
large part of CoT).

Other favorites of mine include:

* Previously mentioned elsewhere on the thread:

* The Prologue to the series. Reading the interaction between
Lews Therin and Ishamael drew me in instantly. Great start.

* Dumai's Wells. Specifically, the line: "Kneel, and swear to the
Lord Dragon... or you will be knelt". Randland changed forever that
day.

* The Last Stand of Ingtar. Redemption is possible, even for a
Darkfriend.

* The Cleansing. The first time the Good Guys (other than Rand)
really give the Forsaken a spanking. Moiraine had defeated Belial and
Lanfear, but this was more military, in a way. The Aes Sedai, Seafolk,
Seanchen, and Ashamen really held their own against an all-out assault
by the supposedly most powerful channelers ever.

The Healing of Logain. Nynaeve, who is not one of my favorite
characters, stuns the world by doing the impossible. Not even the
Forsaken could Heal Severing. That's a pretty damn awesome
accomplishment, and I give her kudos, and remember shivering the first
time I read it.

The scene after Mat and Birgitte's drunkfest, when B scolds Elayne and
Nynaeve for treating Mat with such disdain. Especially when they
reveal that there were Black Ajah and Forsaken present, when Mat had
not mentioned them at all.

There are many more, but just reading through everyone's lists reminds
me that although we may bitch (rightfully) at some of the pacing,
characterizations, and godawful descriptions of the finer points of
embroidery, Robert Jordan has created one of the most detailed,
realistic (so to speak), and exciting tales in all of Fantasy. I wish
him strength and courage in the face of his illness, and pray that he
lives long enough to finish not just this story, but all the stories he
has in his heart.

Peace favor you sword,

Brian

My personal favorite is actually the very first one. Where Lews Therin
is wandering the passages of his home, blissfully unaware of the
destruction he has caused. When Ishmael shimmers into view. The most
dramatic is when Ishmael "cures" Lews and he see's his love dead on the
floor. He grabs her lifeless body screaming his soul out. And then he
gently lowers her to the ground and just by the way he looks at Ishy
causes Ishy to take a step back. Then Ishy's bomb that it was actually
LT that killed her. I've been in love with WoT since then.

My favorite scene is from the end of TgH when Rand is gracing Ingtar. Rand
doing a very good thing by forgiving Ingtar for being a darkfriend and
still calling him friend and accepting Ingtar's will to die. Just
Awesome...

That's just very very well written...

Oh My. My fav scene is the Battle of Emonds Field (against the horde of
Trollocs). Very little has made me as giddy as that episode.

But I will throw something else that I believe hasn't been mentioned,
yet forgive me, I do not have my book with me, and couldn't find the
exact quote, but it's something along the lines as:

'When the Fox marries the Raven, and when the Wolf King holds the
hammer.'

Oh wow. Love it.

But while re-reading TSR - I see a lot of foreshadowing about Perrin
being the Wolf King and the Hammer, Faile says she might tell her
mother Perrin is the King of the Wolves, and Verin grabs at his Axe and
asks 'When are you going to give this up for the Hammer?'

Definitely didn't see that one coming.

But other great scenes others have mentioned:

Egwene being a 'novice' in the tower again and defying everything, and
then all the Novices start to acknowledge her as the Am, or at least
one in need of great recognition and many of the Mat scenes. Mat's my
fav. character, and I love the random memories of way back when, his
Old Tongue usage, and his gerneral(army general) tacktics.
