Whatever Robert Jordan may have been, Brandon Sanderson was not capable
of matching that.

I disagree, I think he did well.

Sad only that Jordan had to put in all the hard work and never really
got the chance at the pay-off he was building up to.

Well you could say he did a lot of manual labour, but it was all
self-inflicted...the hard work was getting it all together and managing
to finish it in just three books, and on time, I'd say!

He wasn't building up to anything. He was stringing things out.

At what point did robert Jordan realize that he was dying?

He was diagnosed in 2006 and the over-under for his condition was four
years. He posted that he intended to beat those odds, and didn't even
come close.

So he thought that he had 4 years to complete the WoT series, but died
much sooner than he expected.

The sad fact is that our mortality is the final terminus to our work.
You can't write if you're dead. And although they do try to keep
franchises and series alive (James Bond even more so than Jordan) it's a
gamble at best.

Not wanting to be morbid, but he did stick to his About the Author
note re: continuing to write until they nailed down the lid of his
coffin (and even after that). So I have to give respect for that.

Unless you're a fantasy or horror character.
