I could buy "too stunned/surprised to act" on this one...I mean, I know
they're AS and trained to be calm and ready to act in all situations,
but this was a pretty bizarre scene.

Possibly....1) She's a moron - not likely; 2) Her brush with the Padan
Fain Experience has her too paranoid to trust anyone else with the
weaves, or to use them in a way that would lead others to figure out
what she's doing. I can buy #2, makes sense.

Yes, even with the Power. Right after she's unstilled, Siuan tries to lift
Gareth Bryne and fails miserably. She thinks that lifting things is one of
the hardest things to do with the Power, but previously she had been able to
lift three times her weight.

Now, according to Cadsuane, Siuan had been one of only five sisters in the
last thousand years whose strength in the Power approached hers. If that's
what's needed to lift 350lb, then it is fairly clear that most sisters
cannot lift 200lb.

Yep, she had no problem lifting Nynaeve and holding her upsidedown in

That covers the top end. http://www.wotmania.com/faqtopic.asp?ID=75 covers
everyone down to people just too weak to pass the final test for the shawl.
It's a little vaguer in places, but it does explain itself when it does
things like place Alivia below Cyndane.

Okay, so Teslyn and Joline come out as level 12 on that scheme -
upper middle of those strong enough to Travel, but not high enough to
use the Choedan Kal. Edesina isn't mentioned anywhere, but she does
seem to defer to the others. There's no indication of whether the
scale of levels progresses arithmetically or logarithmically, or even
whether the levels are pegged correctly (hardly possible given the
thin information given in the books), but it looks the three Aes
Sedai *should* be strong enough to lift someone. That said, it's
probably an ability that decreases over distance, so it could be that
the peddler was just outside their range. Or that they didn't react
fast enough, if they were back along the caravan of wagons.

Whenever I see Sharina's name I wonder...if she has such high
potential, shouldn't that mean she was born with the spark? This can't
be true because of her age, but for the most part we are given the
impression that the strongest wielders of the OP are the so-called
sparkers (Moiraine, Suian, Egwene, Nynaeve, Elayne...). I don't know
about Cadsuane or some of the other highly ranked female channelers,
but this is the way I had interpreted it up until Sharina appeared.
It's also why I am suspicious of her.

Yeah, but that's because a greater proportion of sparkers get trained. Not
all that many women go to the Tower to see if they can learn, so the odds
are good that a
woman with an exceptionally high potential will never find out that she has
it - especially if she's from Tear or Far Madding, where they try to forget
all about the Power.

Siuan and Leane could easily have done so prior to their stilling/healing.
Siuan thinks on this just after she is initially assigned to be Gareth
Bryne's "dog robber" and tries to do so in her severely reduced state (as
one of the weakest Aes Sedai now) and mereley manages to hold him in
place. Any middling or higher Aes Sedai should be able to lift a man with
air quite easily.

Too far away, probably. Mat and the peddler were shouting at eachother
and barely able to make out words. Lifting something with air is
supposed to be very difficult under ideal circumstances.

There would only be so many Aes Sedai strong enough to make gateways
(and there's about 200 in the tower altogether), so bringing in enough
food to feed one of the largest cities in the world is probably
impossible. They could probably keep the Tower supplied, though.

Except that they can link -- and somehow I think 13 AS linked could
make a gateway plenty big enough. And then tie it off.

In other words, either Elaida or RJ is somehow completely missing the
logistical implications of linking, gateways, and tying off weaves.

He has to, otherwise, the Tower would be whole, Faile would have been
rescued four books ago, the Seanchan would have been defeated 9 books
ago, and the series would have been over 6 years ago.

Interesting related question: Can you cut cuendillar with a Gateway?
Or would the cuendillar survive it somehow?
Interesting question. I would say no, but I wonder what would happen.
I guess the gateway wouldn't form or the cuendillar would be pushed
aside. Egwene described the gateway weave as a curtain of spirit that
snapped to a verticle line then "rotated" open. Maybe the cuendillar
would interfere with creating the curtain weave in the first place.

That might also make it impossible (or at least very tricky) to kill a
gholam with a gateway, since the curtain would dissolve before it was
even fully formed.

From the description of the Deathgate weave, it sould do the trick.

This force is probably taken from the channeller strength. It maybe more
efficient than using air, but probably not so much.

Travel and Skim. Why doesn't Elaida use Traveling and Skimming to
bring food into Tar Valon?
There would only be so many Aes Sedai strong enough to make gateways
(and there's about 200 in the tower altogether), so bringing in enough
food to feed one of the largest cities in the world is probably
impossible. They could probably keep the Tower supplied, though.
The women can form circles, and the Tower holds angreal and sa'angreal.
Elaida's a deluded fool.

Very true. I also failed to remember that Elayne has used gateways to
bring food and such into Caemlyn during the seige. I think Tar Valon
is larger than Caemlyn, and despite that many Tower Aes Sedai would
balk at doing anything Elaida orders, they should still be able to help
somewhat. Elayne doesn't have more than a handful of Windfinders
helping her.

I don't think she'd trust Egwene with travelling, or even think she
knew how to do it. Also, she thinks of Eg as a novice, so she wouldn't
likely give much thought to using her for important stuff.

PP250-252: An ancient city sinks into the mud, taking a modern peddler
with it. Among the spectators are 3 Aes Sedai. Why don't they use the
OP to save him?
Too far away, probably. Mat and the peddler were shouting at eachother
and barely able to make out words. Lifting something with air is
supposed to be very difficult under ideal circumstances.

Couldn't they link together in circles of 13 to create bigger Gateways? IIRC,
such a circle made a gateway big enough to accomodate the Salidar AS and their
army.

She is being a control freak. Or perhaps the situation hasn't gotten
that desparate yet.

Probably the same reason nobody does anything to stop Semeriage's
fireball from taking Rands hand.

Also Eladia is a control freak; with the tower so fragmented she might
be afraid to teach people outside the red ajah the weave for traveling
or skimming, and of course there are only a two or three strong if that
that are strong enough for the weave in the ajah.

1. Too far away to do anything about it and not enough time to do it
in. A very disturbing scene regardless.

2. She says and/or thinks to keep the weave to herself for now. I also
think she is just a dumb stupid, grade A+, B****

On the other hand, she did succeed in confusing Egwene about Beonin.

Elaida lets Tarna learn that weave, then forgets to tell Tarna to keep it
secret!

they tried, and did not succeed for whaterver reason.

Others have answered this, but missed the real point. Elaida doesn't
even THINK of the common people. She has no interest in taking care of
Tar Valon itself. She only cares about Aes Sedai, and right now, she
considers HERSELF to be the Aes Sedai, so she only thinks of herself.
Her primary concern right now, as she sees it, is to stay in power.
After all, it's SHE, the great Elaida who will personally lead the
Dragon Reborn out of his pen and hold the lease while Tarmon Gaidin is
fought. What could POSSIBLY be more important than that? So, when she
hears about the new weaves, shes not hinking how She could use THEM,
she is only thinking of how THEY could be used against HER, and somehow
weaken her power (as if she could get any weaker and still stand on two
legs)

She's paranoid... and rightfully so. It's All she thinks about now
since Alvairian had her by the short and hairys. (It's tough to think
of her as a woman, so the manly figurisms seem particularly suiting.)

How does the phrase "had xxx by the short hairs" not work as well with
women, again? IIRC, they have short hairs, much as we do, and I don't
think it'd be any more pleasant for theirs to be tugged soundly.

so why wouldn't she use Gateways to bring in the food?

Why doesn't she use Gateways to transport Tower Guards to behind the rebel
camp to outflank them?

Egwene and an accomplice had turned the harbor chains into cuendillar (sp?),
a substance that's normally invulnerable, even to balefire! If the OP is
aimed at it, it just gets stronger. Would it be possible to use Gateways to
cut the stuff?
